Abstract

Khan Kaen province is situated in the centre of the Northeast region which is the poorest and driest region of Thailand. One of the most important factors determining health condition of the Northeast people is the lack of sufficient acceptable quality of drinking water. Villagers have to rely on rainwater in the rainy season, and ground water from wells in the dry season. Water from wells usually contains a high mineral concentration and is easily contaminated. For villagers who normally do not have access to piped water or other forms of a centrally distributed potable water supply, rain water-seems to be the most viable solution to provide acceptable quality drinking water.

The faculty of Engineering, Khan Kaen University, who plays a key role in the development of the Northeast, undertook a research project which is aimed at providing drinking water supply for villagers in the Northeast. The project title is 'Study on collection and Storage or Roof Runoff for Drinking Purpose". The project is financed by the International Development and Research Centre (IDRC-Canada). The duration of the project is from July 1981 to June 1984.
