The Sizing of Rainwater Stores Using Behavioural Models

Abstract
The collection of rainwater from roofs, its storage and
subsequent use is a simple method of reducing the demand on both the public
water supplies and waste treatment facilities. The capacity of the rainwater
store is important because it affects both system and installation costs.
The rainwater store can be sized using one of three general
types of model, namely, Critical period methods, Moran related methods and
Behavioural models. This paper concentrates upon the use of behavioural models
for the sizing of rainwater stores.
Behavioural models simulate the operation of a reservoir
with respect to time. The operation will usually be simulated over a given
period of time using a time step of a minute, hour or month. The operation of
the store is simulated using either a yield after spillage (YAS) or yield
before spillage (YBS) algorithm. This paper evaluates the accuracy of
behavioural models using different time steps and different sizing algorithms
applied to both large and small stores.
