North American RWH Conference 2005, Call for abstracts
Conference Date: July 14-16, 2005
Venue: Seattle Center, Seattle, Washington, USA
Sponsor: American Rainwater Catchment System Association
The North American Rainwater Harvesting Conference will include two days of
presentations, poster sessions, and exhibit displays, followed by a third day
for optional field trip(s). Individuals interested in presenting a paper or poster
at the above conference are asked to prepare a one-page abstract describing the
subject matter and/or results in sufficient detail to allow evaluation of the
proposed paper. The deadline for submission of abstracts is January 15, 2005

USA to fund rain harvesting in Bengal, India
Two districts in West Bengal that receive good rainfall but have water shortage
during summer will have their worries resolved by a rainwater harvesting project
funded by the US. A model project on rainwater harvesting funded by the US consulate
here and supported by the US-AEP
office is scheduled for inauguration in Purulia district's Bagmundi town. The
project, which will also run in Birbhum district's Suri, is being implemented
by the city-based Institute of Wetland Management and Ecological Design (IWMED).

American Rainwater Catchment Systems Association (ARCSA): Northwest Regional
RWH Conference
The Northwest chapter of ARCSA and Seattle Public Utilities have scheduled
a one-day conference on rainwater harvesting in Seattle Sept. 23, 2004.
ARCSA and SPU expect the conference to bring together people with interest
in rainwater harvesting including commercial and residential property owners and
developers, architects and landscape architects, engineers, system designers and
builders, government agencies and producers and sellers of various products. Design
and current regulations on rainwater harvesting both for beneficial use and drainage
control will be part of the program.

CD ROM Training Course on Water Harvesting released by the Food and Agriculture
Organization
The CD ROM provides training modules and other relevant material on water harvesting
in five languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French and Spanish) focusing on 'runoff
farming systems' for improved production of crops, trees and rangeland species
in drought-prone areas. The objective of this training materials are (i) to raise
awareness of technical staff, extension workers and other stakeholders on the
water harvesting options available and (ii) to build local capacity on the use
of available data for adequate planning, systematic design and sustainable implementation
of water harvesting systems.

Stable and steady
rise in level of groundwater recorded in rainwater harvesting project sites, says
CSE survey report
New Delhi, June 15, 2004: Rainwater harvesting can recharge the declining groundwater
levels in cities. Data from 11 rainwater harvesting projects spread across Delhi
shows an increase of 5 to 10 metres in the groundwater levels over two years.
At a meeting of the network of rainwater harvesters of Delhi, the Centre for
Science and Environment (CSE) presented the results of its survey from May 2002
to May 2004 on the level of groundwater in rainwater harvesting sites; these sites
have been designed by CSE.

Exhibitions on rainwater harvesting in Delhi, India
CSE's Jal Swaraj campaign organised two exhibitions in Delhi in February 2004.
Posters displayed urban RWH strategies and outlined methods and techniques of
harvesting rainwater in urban settings and showcased CSE's model projects.

ADB Water Week: A Networking Opportunity for IRCSA
A Water Week was organized by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), and held at
its headquarters in Manila, Philippines from 26 - 30 January 2004. It aimed to
catalyze the implementation of its water policy 'Water for All', and the theme
of the week was "Water for the Poor - Setting the Rules and Finding the
Money".
The objectives were to stimulate knowledge and information sharing on critical
water sector issues, facilitate a change in mindsets, and promote good policies

Philippine RWH Conference
The Second National Conference on Rainwater Utilization of the Philippines
took place in Iloilo City, Panay Island, from December 2 - 5 2003. The event saw
speakers from as far as Germany and Taiwan alongside those located in the Philippines,
and with over 120 participants, there was a sizable audience. The topics covered
included the extent of use or waste of rainwater why rainwater harvesting, rainwater
for flood control, and for eco-sanitation and rainwater for industry. Examples
