Gender & IWRM
From 8 - 15 February 2003, a week of regional training of trainers on Gender
Mainstreaming in Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) took place in Kuala
Lumpur, Malaysia. As part of the Training and Capacity Building initiatives of
the Gender and Water Alliance (GWA) and in collaboration with the Department of
Environmental Sciences of the Universiti Putra Malaysia, this regional training
aimed to enable organizations and institutions to develop their own capacity in
the application of gender mainstreaming tools and methods. The devastation wrought
on millions makes promoting the optimum involvement of all sections of society
- women and men, rich and poor, in decisions about how to sustain our precious
water resources a crucial factor.
This GWA training of trainers aimed to equip the participants with the knowledge
and skills required to design and conduct practical training courses in mainstreaming
gender into integrated water resources management (IWRM) - a process which promotes
the coordinated development and management of water, land and related resources,
in order to maximize the resultant economic and social welfare in an equitable
manner without compromising the sustainability of vital ecosystems.
Designed with seven modules, this regional training hoped to achieve the following
specific objectives;
- Collectively review the participants' theoretical, conceptual and practical
understanding of gender difference and inequality
- Discuss ways in which gender is significant in the context of IWRM and to
answer the basic questions of what gender and IWRM are
- Understand the history of addressing women's and gender concerns in the context
of IWRM and to discuss current gender-related international agreements and commitments
- Discuss strategies to promote gender equality within the staffing, organizational
culture and working practices of water sector organizations and departments
- Identify and practice skills involved in planning, conducting, monitoring
and evaluating effective gender training in the context of IWRM.
